Born in London in 1969, Brown studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, developing skills in printmaking, painting and draftsmanship. In the early 90s she moved to New York and quickly achieved critical acclaim for her sexually charged paintings of distorted fleshy forms.
Combining figurative and abstract elements, Brown paints rich sensual colours with lively brushstrokes. Her compassionate approach to depicting human vulnerability is often gently humorous; the canvases adopt their titles from well-loved musicals or films. Her work has previously been featured by several prominent institutions, including MoMA PS1 in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Saatchi Gallery, London.
The artist is currently based in New York.
