Christopher Wool

(American, b.1955)

Born in 1955, Wool grew up in Chicago, and studied at the Studio School in New York. In the 1970s he began experimenting with abstract mark making, often using hand rollers to apply paint. In the 1980s this emphasis on process increased as he created works devoid of specific subject and form. Incorporating print-making techniques, he began creating word paintings which featured vowel-less phrases laid out in grid patterns.

In the last fifteen years Wool has introduced additional elements into his work such as silkscreen, solvent, and spray paint, making and erasing marks on a canvas. His images emerge sharply from blurred surfaces: the visual push and pull illustrates Wool’s exploration of how the creative process affects artistic meaning.

Wool is based in New York and Texas.
